The following page provides information on IXL, the online maths system that I use for tuition! I highly recommend IXL and strongly believe that it is an excellent system that can be extremely beneficial both inside and outside of lessons. Remember though that the use of IXL with myself is completely optional and not something that you have to join if you would rather not.
With regards to IXL itself, it’s very tricky to simply explain everything it has to offer in one message, so I would ask you to first please have have a browse through the IXL website, which I will provide below, in order to gain a greater insight into IXL.
I have already paid for all of my clients and students to have access to accounts with me (so make sure you don’t purchase anything yourself!), so by having an account, all of your work will be saved on your account and I’ll have access to it as well to be able to help you! I can even see all of the answers provided to questions that students answer and lots of other information, so can help in lessons with questions that students maybe were unsure on.
IXL can be greatly beneficial within lessons, not only can it be used as teaching tool, but setting homework for students is made much easier, we can set homework faster meaning more time can be provided elsewhere during lessons. Don’t forget however, IXL can be used completely independently as well, so if for instance you wanted to get a head start on a topic in school, or wanted to revise for an upcoming test etc, you can actually do so without any input from myself, but of course as always, if you do have any questions for me, you are always more than welcome to ask!
IXL has a great diagnostic tool, for assessing student's current progress also. it assigns levels on different strands of maths and an overall level, where roughly 100 points is the same as a year in school. The diagnostic also un-sets itself after a while, requiring student's to keep it updated as we go along. The diagnostic will basically ask questions around your level on different strands of maths until it figures out where your levels should be set. There's also a button to skip questions if you are unsure, meaning IXL will then know more about what you need to cover and will potentially recommend that for you also!
There is also an app that you can download for devices that makes IXL even more versatile and easy to use, and I highly recommend using this! There are also elements on there with regards to the curriculum for Wales and it has topics from reception all the way up to year 13! Obviously just be careful with regards to what your completing on there as you may not need to do some topics at the moment, or even at all depending on your year, level or exam board. If you are unsure as to whether you should complete a certain topic don’t be afraid to send me a message and I’d be more than happy to take a look for you! Also the client and student share an account with IXL, so if you’d like more information, feel free to both use the account, or alternatively let me know if you have any further questions!
IXL also gives us the ability for me to set a ‘recommendation’ for the student which I’m going to use for setting homework, however, I will not be setting tasks unless it is something we have agreed upon. For anyone that decides to have an account, I’ll make sure to provide an in depth demonstration to the student during a lesson and show them everything they need to know! And as always clients are always welcome in lessons if you’d like to see it and learn it to! From now I’m going to assume that clients only want homework if signed up to IXL, to make admin easier for myself.
Just for your information, on the system I can see everyone’s passwords for their accounts, so please remember not to use any same passwords you use anywhere else and to also keep it appropriate. I also have the functionality to change your password if that’s ever required. I highly recommend keeping your password as the same randomly generated password as what it's set to during creating your account. The student's login details will also be saved at the bottom of the majority of their lesson notes if you ever need them.
If you would like an account for IXL, just let me know and then I will get everything all set up for you. Once I have made you an account, I’ll let you know your username and password, then if you have a browse and a look around in order to familiarise yourself with IXL, we’ll then try to go through everything in more detail during our next lesson!
I hope that all of this information helps with getting yourself ready for IXL! We can always go over anything with regards to IXL and use it in lessons as well if you would like to, that is absolutely not a problem at all! And as always, please feel free to let me know if you have absolutely any questions at all, as I am always more than happy to help if I can! Thank you so so much once again for everything and I hope you all enjoy using IXL!
